Talking Books
By Sarah E. Lockyer

Happy Hour at Home
Hosting co-workers? Try Working (The New Press 1972), Studs Terkel’s classic about Americans’ relationships with work, from the garbage industry to bigwig executives. For insight on the modern 9-to-5 grind, get Gig (Three Rivers Press 2000), a compilation that follows Terkel’s lead, culling commentary from everyone such as the littlest lemonade salesman to movie maven Jerry Bruckheimer.

Housewarming
Get to know the people in your neighborhood. The Houses We Live In (Thunder Bay Press 2002) explores American home design and their influential architects, including beautiful color illustrations of legendary abodes like Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and Frank Lloyd Wright’s La Miniatura. Looking for home inspiration? Trading Spaces, Behind the Scenes (Meredith Corp., 2003), which deconstructs The Learning Channel’s hit show and its hosts, should do the job.

Girls Night In

Make every night ladies’ night with female-friendly reads. The Bitch in the House (William Morrow 2002) is a hilarious look into the lives of 26 extremely honest women, featuring essays such as "The Myth of Co-Parenting" and "Why I Hate That My Mother Was Right." For true women of the world, check out I am Diva! (Warner Books, 2003), which offers tips and quips about living the daily diva life—complete with an "I am Diva!" certificate that’s yours at year’s end.
