| Abracadabra:
It's a centerpiece! |
|
 |
By Shabnam Mogharabi
Why would you ever serve a festive paella
on a table with a drab centerpiece? As
your tables focal point, a centerpiece
must be bold, bright and, above all, easy
to make. Save time with this creative,
colorful attention-grabber. And if your
summertime festivities include a watermelon-throwing
contest, it may just come in handy.
Add to your
shopping list:
1 large watermelon (preferably flat on
one side)
12 bell peppers of various colors (red,
yellow, green, orange)
1 bunch large white daisies or spider
mums
Total Time: About 20 minutes
Step 1: Cut the watermelon
in half and scoop out the flesh from one
side. Rinse, pat dry and cover with plastic
wrap. Place the watermelon "bowl"
in the refrigerator until the rind is
chilled thoroughly. Step
2: Rinse and dry the bell peppers.
Arrange the vegetables in the watermelon
bowl as high as you want. If the perfectionist
in you must balance the peppers, try using
toothpicks to secure them to one another.
Step 3: Cut
the flower stems to about 3-5 inches long.
Insert them between the bell peppers.
The blooms should last several hours.
Give them more life by filling the watermelon
with a little pool of water.
Helpful hints:
Give the inside of the bowl a salt
scrub. It draws out the rinds extra
moisture.
Use another combination of fresh fruits
and vegetables for other colors.
Swiping baby oil on the peppers
makes them shine. Flowers
with water tubes attached last even longer. |
