Invite Recommends: Music
Is This It? The Strokes' album cover.

By Bartley Morrisroe

Rock

Oasis – Definitely Maybe – "Tonight I’m a rock ‘n’ roll star," Liam Gallagher sneers on the opening track of Oasis’ debut album. Definitely Maybe became the fastest selling debut album in British music history.

The Strokes – Is This It? – This New York five-piece melds influences from Television to the Velvet Underground and sounds awfully good doing it.

The Who – Who’s Next – Even if it was co-opted by Disney awhile back, "Baba O’Riley" still stands as one of the all-time sing-along classics. Album closer "Won’t Get Fooled Again" is no slouch either.

Weezer – Weezer – Quite possibly the most fun you will ever have with an album. Four slackers recorded a garage rock album, infused it with geeky harmonies and songs about girls and somehow ended up producing genius.

The Velvet Underground and Nico – The Velvet Underground and Nico– This album is the perfect mix of Lou Reed’s expert songwriting, John Cale’s experimentation and Nico’s gorgeous vocals. This is truly a classic.

Jefferson Airplane – Surrealistic Pillow – As one of the first San Francisco psychedelic bands to gain national recognition in the ‘60s, Jefferson Airplane did not disappoint with their second album, which includes "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love."

Latin

Bebel Gilberto – Tanto Tempo – Her father is Joao Gilberto, one of the godfathers of bossa nova. Bebel proves that the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree with her 2000 solo debut.

Santana – Abraxas – Before his duet with Matchbox Twenty’s Rob Thomas, Santana made some awfully good music on his own. This, his second album, is one of his most eclectic albums.

Arturo Sandoval – Straight Ahead – This Cuban-born musician is one of the world’s great trumpeters. Straight Ahead features his playing over a standard quartet.

Jazz

Duke Ellington – The Duke Ellington Carnegie Hall Concerts, January 1943 – This two-CD set includes the only full-length version of "Black, Brown and Beige" that Ellington ever recorded with his orchestra.

Count Basie – Count Basie at Newport – This recording from the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival features Basie and his big band along with guests Lester Young and singer Jimmy Rushing.

Reggae

Toots and the Maytals – Funky Kingston – This was the first band to use the word reggae in a song title, even if they did spell it "reggay." They were also one of the tightest groups in the history of the music.

Black Uhru – Red – This is one of the many fine albums recorded by the most successful of the second-generation reggae bands.

The Harder They Come soundtrack – Featuring the music of star Jimmy Cliff, The Harder They Come soundtrack is an excellent, and influential, collection of reggae music.
