Al
Capone
Alphonse Caponi was born in Brooklyn
in 1899. He went to school with Salvatore Lucania - better
known as Lucky Luciano. When Capone (he changed his name
to sound more American) was 10, he started following up
and coming gangster Johnny Torrio around. At fourteen, he
quit school and joined the Five Pointers gang with Lucky
Luciano.
One night, Capone made a comment about the sister of Frank
Galluciano. The fellow gangster took offence and slashed
Capone's face with a pocketknife. The attack left three
large scars on the left side of his face. For much of his
career, newspapers would call Capone Scarface," a nickname
which he hated.
Al Capone followed Torrio to Chicago in 1918. When Torrio
retired in 1925, he turned over leadership of his gang to
Capone. Thereafter, "Scarface" became the leader
of the most powerful gang in Chicago. He is most notorious
for the St. Valentine's Day
Massacre of 1929.
In
the 1930s, Al Capone spent seven years in prison, including
Alcatraz. Al Capone died on Jan. 25, 1947 in Florida.
