The St. Valentine's Day Massacre

On St. Valentine's Day 1929, Al Capone's men killed seven of Bugs Moran's men in a warehouse on 2122 N. Clark Street. It was the most spectacular mob hit in gangsterland history.

The building was the S-M-C Cartage Company. Bugs Moran's men were at the warehouse waiting for a truckload of smuggled Canadian whiskey from Detroit. Moran was supposed to meet them at 10:30 in the morning but got stuck at anther meeting. When he reached the warehouse, he saw a police car and hung back.

Five men - three in police uniforms and two civilians - got out of the car. They walked into the building and shot all seven of Moran's men.

When neighbors, who had heard shots came to check, they found a bloody murder scene. The gangsters had been lined up against the rear wall and sprayed with machine guns. Moran survived because he had hung back and fled when he heard the shots.

Although Al Capone first blamed the murders on Moran, he later admitted having ordered the shootings.

The warehouse at 2122 N. Clark was demolished in 1967.
