Chicago Public Housing Design:
Past, Present and Future

The Grace Abbott Homes, part of the ABLA Homes.
The Grace Abbott Homes, completed in 1955, are another subdevelopment of the ABLA homes. Consisting of row houses as well as 15-story high rises, the development was built on 10 square blocks with no through streets. This was intended to provide plenty of open space for residents, but actually increased the potential for crime because police cars could not patrol the streets.
