Chicago Public Housing Design:
Past, Present and Future

Cabrini-Green high rise on the North Side.
The original Cabrini-Green development, built in 1942, consisted of low rises. But when the CHA extended the development in the 1950s it built a number of high rises, some as tall as 19 stories. As the years passed the project became synonymous with the widespread crime and violence that occurred there. As the surrounding neighborhood has gentrified, these high rises have become the focus of CHA demolition efforts.
